I salute you Sarge's. Absolutely delicious eggs Benedict. Even Despite the sheer hazard of delivering expertly poached eggs to my home. Sarge's delivered an eggs Benedict with not two, but, three creamy egg yolks. Accompanied by a judicious helping of their flavorful and properly viscous hollandaise sauce. The home fries were good but, not memorable. I missed the crunchiness and bold flavors from the potatoes. The English muffins were fresh, toasted, and adequately buttered. Solid breakfast. I can't wait to try other menu items.
Tips: Get the Eggs Benedict -

Sad, dry pastrami. Overpriced with inattentive service during non-busy hours. I'd say my experience was on par with making my own pastrami from Key Foods bought deli meat and day old rye, bringing it with some pickles in a plastic baggie to a McDonald's close to Times Square, and serving myself.
Very sad. 2nd Ave Deli is a much better 'classic' experience, and Harry & Ida's pastrami beats this by far. Junior's or Katz's also come to mind as establishments with a similar style, and all of those are far and above Sarge's. -

I decided to update my review and change to 5 stars. The delivery fees have gone down which is nice or if you order from them directly, you get a discount which offsets the delivery fee.
The prices may seem a bit high but the portions are very big. The Bronx sliders are still among my favorite but I sometimes have a problem where they add onions even when I don't want them.
Some of my other favorites are the rack of lamb, French onion soup, and black out cake. I do wish they'd use a bigger container for the slices of cake because they tend to show up crushed against the lid and for $8 for a slice of cake, you'd expect it to show up in tact. -

It was late. I wanted NYC deli. The Carnegie Deli is closed (cue a sad violin playing.)
Using my Yelp app I began searching for a new contender and found Sarge's. It is open 24 hours. Awesome! I even found parking on the street which was wonderful. I think NYC probably wins the award for the world's most over priced private parking lots.
When I walked in to Sarge's I saw one group leaving and I was the only person left. The waitress, the typical "whatta ya want" employee you would expect in a NYC deli brought me a menu.
They have lots of options: breakfast, diner foods and of course NYC delicatessen favorites which was my reason for checking them out.
I saw people on Yelp mention the chopped liver was outstanding. They were correct. I absolutely loved it! They served it with rye bread on the side. How about some bagel chips or crackers? That would have made more sense as it was an appetizer.
After that I decided I needed to get a sandwich but I had a tough time deciding what I wanted. So I opted for the sandwich platter. I figured I would be bringing plenty home. I opted for the mandatory corned beef and pastrami as well as tongue and salami. I have never had tongue before and I enjoyed it but probably would not eat it again as a sandwich. It has a potent flavor and is pretty fatty and salty.
The salami, pastrami and corned beef were all good but nothing that blew me away. In the world of pastrami, Carnegie was king and this didn't hit that mark. I would say the corned beef was the best of the bunch.
The platter also included deli style cole slaw, potato salad and a side of Russian dressing. The obligatory pickles were included as well. Pickled tomatoes were extra. The slaw and potato salad were excellent, the Russian was meh.
I decided to finish my meal with a slice of cheesecake. Man oh man did I love the cheesecake at Carnegie. My family always shared some after a meal there. Sarge's offered Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake so I gave it a shot. It was a hefty slice but the peanut butter was almost non existent. I wasn't all that impressed.
I ate a few fork fulls and then asked for my bill. The restaurant was pretty full at this point and the waitress was running ragged. It took a while to get my bill. My food was already wrapped but I left my partially eaten slice of cheesecake which I planned to take home on the table. I had already asked for a box but didn't receive it.
I got up to pay my bill at the register (per the waitresses instructions) and when I returned to my table the bus boy, who looked like a WWE wrestler had cleared my plates and thrown the cheesecake away. Seriously??? I was noticeably annoyed and I received a death stare from the bus giant. I told the waitress what happened and she mentioned he didn't speak much English. She offered to replace the slice but had to get manager approval. She handed me a bag, I said good night and she said be safe out there. I opened the door and a small crowd of gentleman wanted to chat with me, made a crack about my weight and was probably ready to ask for money. I said "how's it going fellas" and walked briskly to my car. By this point it was probably 1 am.
I would say the food at Sarge's was four stars but the service was clearly not. The grumpy waitress that was unable to keep up with the customers and the inept bus boy put a damper on the evening.
Oh right.... the next day I opened up the bag to have some cheesecake. She had given me a different slice from the one I ordered. Doh! -

The soup and sandwich deal was exactly what i needed when i was sick on my trip. Quick prep and helpful considering i couldn't' talk properly due to illness.
Mixed Turkey on white rye with swiss and mayo and mustard. Chicken soup with matzo balls - something i was determined to give a go while in the city. Picked up 1 of each sour and regular pickles - EXACTLY what i was looking for!
For a no-nonesense in and out deli in the hub-ub of the city, Sarges made my weekend :)
